In East Tennessee, coal miners found several of these same types of trees turned to stone, still standing upright! It caught the attention of the National Geographic magazine, with a full page photo showing up in an issue in 1970’s. Trees should not stand up for long ages waiting to be turned to stone! National Geographic noted that this fossil must have been the result of a flood but supposed it to be a very ancient local flood. Lost to the public for years after, David’s team was able to rediscover these fossils and collect photos and videos of the remarkable specimens. Along with sites in Nova Scotia, China, Scotland, and many other places, these trees in Tennessee are examples of the catastrophic processes of the flood. This event buried hundreds of trees in mud, fossilizing them in the upright position.
