What is a fossil?

Fossils are the preserved remains of once living animals and plants. The vast majority of fossils were created by being buried quickly and deeply during the course of the worldwide flood. In most cases, the actual planet or animal material has been replaced by mineral content. Soft parts are rarely preserved. Most fossils are found preserved in beds of hard rock and will show some damage when they are removed.
