Description
Petrified wood is wood that has been replaced by minerals. This process replaces the wood, cell by cell, and oftentimes preserves the features of the wood in great detail. It is possible in some pieces of petrifies wood to see preserved knot holes, bark, and to count the rings in the wood. Many pieces of petrified wood are gray or brown. In some cases, the right minerals create a very colorful fossil which is even more colorful when wet.
