The Design and Complexity of the Cell

The functions within the cells of our bodies are foundational to our existence

Understanding these functions has made the environment and the processes of our lifestyles healthier, more enjoyable, and more productive. All of humanity has benefited from the life sciences and the scientists who have dedicated their considerable skills to uncovering the functions and processes of the multifaceted variety of cells. The Design and Complexity of the Cell examines this variety and function.

Although scientists have discovered, documented, and developed wonderful insights about the complex information, precise sequential processes, and unique interwoven controls within cells, there is a huge chasm among scientists when they try to understand how these highly efficient processes got started in the first place.

The majority of scientifically trained biologists and geneticists are taught that the apparent design that is observed in cells is the result of only random chemical and energy processes operating over eons of time.

Such a belief system prompts their thinking to rest on purely natural logic, producing materialistic conclusions?—?and often ignoring or marginalizing the implications of careful engineering and design.

There are, however, multiple thousands of scientists who accept the Bible’s message that there is a Creator who planned the creation, designed the intricate engineering efficiencies in that creation, and then built the product: our planet and its wonderfully unique life and functions. That belief system not only fits empirically with what is observed (design, precise function, operational efficiencies, etc.), but provides insight that enables creation-based scientists to grasp the significance of the information more readily?—?without having to invent a supposed eons-long story for the development of what is actually observed.

Dr. Jeffrey Tomkins and his contributing colleagues have provided an excellent resource that will document and help explain the intricate processes of cells and give keen insight for “clearly seeing” the obvious hand of the Creator in the “things that are made” (Romans 1:20).

The text, though technical, is written so that it is very easy to understand. I really enjoyed this book. It is exactly what I had hoped it would be. I believe it is extremely important that Christians should have a good understanding of their DNA and how it is the building blocks of our temples which God specifically told us not to defile. (1 Corinthians 3:17) I highly recommend that you watch the Body Codes Trilogy (Wonders episodes) in conjunction with any study on DNA. Another excellent video is the Wonders episode, The Fingerprint of God.
Another thing I really appreciated about this book is the truth it presents on embryonic stem cell research especially in addressing the three erroneous arguments in support of ESCs one of which- “The pragmatic claim that ESC research ‘saves human life’s…claim mankind has a moral obligation to pursue ESC research…prohibiting human ESC research is immoral.” (Pg. 110 of book) This erroneous argument is way too prevalent these days as is the third argument refuted in the book (the baby is going to die anyway so might as well use it for medical research), so it was so refreshing to see a Christian speak the truth. It is never right to do wrong. (Romans 6:1-2) It is never right to murder to save life. “the analogy to healthy adults is illuminating: Would any same human being view the slaughter of innocent, healthy human adults for the sake of body parts as a moral imperative? Clearly, this objection, like the first, also collapses upon close inspection…Thus, this third excuse for ESC research also fails to be either persuasive or morally sound.” (Pg. 110 of book)
A couple of the contributing authors are pro-pharmaceutical whereas I am not due to religious beliefs that includes ethical issues involving in vitro (I was shocked at how in vitro testing seems to be standard procedure in drug testing), but Appendix 2 is really informative. It describes in detail the entire process of bringing a new drug etcetera to the market- a long, complicated process designed to make sure the product is safe and effective. It is important for people to know what it all takes to bring a new drug etcetera into circulation not just for the purpose of doing their own research but also to evaluate scripturally any ethical issues involved so one can make a biblical choice.
