Where Do We Get The Week? -by David Rives

In Exodus chapter 20, we’re informed that “in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day”

If we take the Bible at its word, as literal truth, then God decided to stretch the creation of the Universe over a 6 day span. As the all-powerful Creator, He could have finished it in an instant… but He didn’t.

As the God of Israel, He doesn’t need sleep, so He could have easily chosen not to rest the next day… but He did. Why make the entire creation event exactly 7 days? He was setting up the weekly cycle!

Think about it: Where do we get the week from?

It’s obvious that the month is roughly calculated by the time it takes the moon to go through a complete cycle.

Also very evident is the year, calculated as the approximate time it takes for the sun to return to the same point of the sky, giving us each season.

But the week? From the creation, this 7 day cycle has been preserved to the present, despite several attempts to alter the pattern.

If we believe the Bible, it makes sense that it was a specially instituted cycle in the beginning. But if there is no God, then why do we have the week?

  1. Yes the 7th day is special, it’s the only day that was set aside for us humans to worship our Creator. God rested upon His Sabbath day, blessed the seventh day & hallowed it. We worship Him as the Creator by keeping His Sabbath. The Sabbath was established for all humanity as a sign between God & His people. The Sabbath was in existence 2,300 years before the existence of the Jews as a memorial of creation for all humanity.
    Gen. 2:1-3, Ex. 20: 1-3, Mk. 2: 27,28, Exek.20: 12-20 Jesus was a faithful Sabbathkeeper Luke 4: 16

  2. Dear David,
I could not make the video work, but enjoyed the simple observations of the source of the seven-day week.

Following the French Revolution, I understand that, in order to get away from any religious connotation in day-to-day business, the Revolutionaires attempted to impose an 8-day week calendar. It wound up in chaos long before the end of the first year, and was abandoned (but it did make a nice basis for the Beatles’ Song ‘Eight Days a Week.’)
God has always blessed those who honor His Word.
That is one reason why I love your work so much.
Many blessings on your entire staff and family, David.

  3. I do concur with your argument for the origin of the week in this article. God in His wisdom has placed or allowed items in the Bible for our positive benefit therefore I am saying His rest on the Seventh day was an example for mankind showing that we need to rest as a natural part of each week. Also, we needed this type of rest to remember Him as the creator of the earth and the universe; to reflect and worship Him; to give Him praise and thanks that only He should receive. Then if we might examine this rest day we see that this day was Blessed Hallowed and Sanctified making it very different and distinct from the other days of the week. (I could say a lot more on this but will stop here) I must notice that there is yet another move in recent times to make a change in the week, not a change like what the French attempted some centuries ago but one in which Monday will become the first day of the week which would automatically change the day of rest set up by the God. of creation.

  4. Yes I agree with statements above re the 7 day week, so why are so many of not observing the seventh day sabbath which God asks us all to do in the 4 th commandment , answer please!
